What an awesome experience I had at the Independent Living Day Rally in Olympia, Washington on March 11th!! Over 1,000 people filled the steps at our states’ capital…… people of all ages, backgrounds, etc. stood and sat in the freezing-cold (yet sunny??) day to hear speakers talk about living independently. There were several speakers who shared their stories of living independently.
The purpose for the rally was to let the legislators know that people with disabilities WANT to live independently (not in institutions) and they want to work and pay taxes and be a vital part to our society. They are our friends, neighbors, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, sons and dauthers, who want to live a rich life as any typical person would. With a little help people with different abilities can do everything any other person can.
